to intervene or not to intervene

that is the question

Rigs is chewing on dod biscuits to help with giving up smoking and says that he shoots people, but not dogs. We could learn a lot from this short clip.

Many people have told me that I’m passive, but when a dog threatened to attack our dog, I pushed him away with such force that I tore my biceps tendon off the bone.

Lao Tzu writes in #29. “Do you think you can take over the universe and improve it? I do not believe it can be done. The universe is sacred. You cannot improve it. If you try to change it, you will ruin it. If you try to hold it you will lose it.” and, bless him, in #8 he writes “In action, watch the timing.”

And … if a bus is about to run you over …

A father was called to a parent teacher’s meeting because his 15yo son was behaving badly. The principal and class teacher complained that they were having trouble with the boy. The father surprised the teacher by saying “Excuse me, but are you asking me to believe that two adult teachers were having trouble with one 15yo boy?”. The boy was delighted that his father went in to bat for him.

Cloe Madanes was asked for help from a hospital therapist because a patient was still suffering the loss of his father after 3 months since his death, which according to DSM was diagnosed as clinical depression. Cloe instructed the therapist to tell the son that he had suffered a deep wound and it may take as long as a year to heal. The man was relieved to be told he was not suffering from a mental condition, but the therapist was sacked for not complying with hospital protocol.

A 16yo boy complained to his father that his teacher hit him over the head with a rolled up newspaper. The father immediately confronted the teacher by saying that his behaviour was understandable since the father had felt like doing the same thing on many occasions, but as a teacher, he behaviour was unacceptable, and if he were to be reported, that would end his career. The father emphasised that he was not interested in doing that, but he required the teacher to apologise to the boy in front of the whole class. To his credit, the teacher did.

RD Laing wrote about a 28 yo woman whose father had sex with her as a child and was still having sex with her even though she was married. They decided together that she was to keep away from her father until she could adequately defend herself. She did, and then visited her father and told him “If you ever touch me again, I’ll kill you”. After this they were able to have a normal relationship.

Laing also wrote about a young woman he told that if he were to diagnose her problem, she would be stuck with the label of catatonic schizophrenia wich would require medication for the rest of her life. Instead, he informed her that this problem usually resolved itself over time, so she found a job as an artist’s model.
